Is this blog post real life? YES, YES it is my friends!! Most of you know I attended Katelyn James workshop last November and came back with a whole new business approach and a ton of photography skills!! From the words of Mitchell, “That’s the best investment we have ever made for your business!!” Mitchell needed a little convincing when I asked if I could attend the workshop last year. He wasn’t opposed, but he did want to make sure it was the right decision. Now that he has seen the leaps and bounds my business has taken from the educational investment in Katelyn’s workshop – he is a FAN!! He didn’t hesitate when I asked to attend a coaching session with Katelyn this year!! I knew I had to be ready when her newsletter came out announcing the newest coaching session dates! The moment I woke up I clicked the link and booked my spot. Praise the Lord, I got a spot!!
Last week I drove to Richmond, VA to spend the day with Katelyn. I had spent the last few months thinking of questions to ask and thinking through where my business was at currently, where it was going and where I wanted it to go. With all of our moves over the last couple of years, my business is a little different from most. I have “re-started” my business in a new state three times now. While it has been challenging it has been great at the same time. The Lord has provided in more ways that I could imagine. Oh me of little faith!!
I met Katelyn, Michael and another sweet photographer, Diana for lunch in Richmond. After some delicious food, we headed to a parking garage close by… yes, a parking garage… for headshots! Katelyn showed us that it IS possible to get beautiful portraits in a not so ideal location!!
Next stop, 3 hours in the Alsop’s beautiful home learning from the best of the best! Ok… next stop was actually me loving on Bokeh (Katelyn’s adorable BichPoo dog) and throwing his toy around for a bit.. and THEN we dove right in!!
We covered everything from shooting and editing to blogging and client experiences. We talked a lot about what sets me apart from everyone else in the industry. This is something I struggle with. To be completely vulnerable, most days I feel pretty average and truthfully don’t feel anyone wants to read my blogs or hear much about my life. Katelyn helped me see the good in all the things I think are flaws.. like my small voice, for example. I have spent my whole life hating my voice – which is part of the reason I hate talking on the phone with strangers. BUT my voice sets me apart and I’m learning to love it. She helped me see what my “brand boosters” are and also that I am passionate about marriage and love. Not just because “I love, LOVE” but because Mitchell and I fought to have love in our own life. You can read the short version of our love story, here. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t typical but it is our fairytale and it’s why we are passionate about marriage and what it represents. We want others to know our story and we want them to know the same hope we have known in our marriage, Jesus!
She helped me fix things that could be better in my business all while sending me off with a boost of confidence and a very long to-do list. Before I knew it we were wrapping up and it was time for me to get on the road back to Raleigh! My head was spinning on my drive home – in the BEST way possible. So many things I wanted to do RIGHT then. I was bursting with new ideas and techniques that I wanted to implement immediately. Needless to say, the last week has been full of work and so many exciting things!!
Katelyn, “THANK YOU” really isn’t enough, words just aren’t enough. You are truly an inspiration and a role model to so many. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to learn from you and get to know you. I would NOT be where I am today as a person and as a photographer if it weren’t for you. Thank you for your kindness, generosity and passion for teaching. You are the most genuinely kind and sweet friend I have ever met – it amazes me!! You really care about ME and my business. It’s evident that you want me to succeed. Not by an industry standard alone but as a person, a friend and a wife. THANK YOU!! I can’t wait to see you again so soon ;)!!
Just a few of my parking garage headshots… 🙂
